Name It. Claim It. Secure the Nonprofit Future of Your Business.
Your nonprofit holding company needs a legit name — and a locked-in domain. We show you exactly how to do both.
Welcome back to Nonprofit YOUR Business — the only newsletter showing business owners how to legally structure their companies under an IRS-approved nonprofit.
If you’re following along with our real-time build, you now know:
✅ Why a nonprofit holding company makes sense
✅ How to define your mission in IRS-friendly terms
✅ Why we chose Delaware for incorporation
Now it’s time to make it real.
🔍 Step 1: Search Your Nonprofit Name (Don’t Skip This)
The name you want might not be available in the state you're filing in. Since we’re using Delaware for our nonprofit, we show you exactly how to search their business registry, what to look for, and how to lock in a name that checks all the IRS boxes.
This process is nearly identical in other states, too — so if you’re not using Delaware, the same approach still applies.
🌐 Step 2: Buy Your Domain (Before Someone Else Does)
Once your name is cleared, snag the matching .ORG domain.
Even if you never build a site, owning the domain protects your brand and adds legitimacy to your nonprofit — especially if you want to apply for grants, discounts (like TechSoup), or business registrations.
We use Namecheap because it’s fast, clean, and cheap (under $10). It’s also what we used ourselves when building Nonprofit YOUR Business.
💡 Pro Tip: Name Strategy for Holding Companies
Should your nonprofit’s name match your for-profit business?
✅ It can — but it doesn’t have to.
💬 In fact, it might be smarter to choose a broader, education-driven name that reflects your nonprofit’s purpose (e.g., “The Small Business Resilience Foundation”).
This gives you room to house multiple for-profit businesses beneath it while staying compliant with 501(c)(3) guidelines.
📣 Coming Next: How to File Your Articles of Incorporation
Now that your name and domain are locked, we’ll show you how to officially file your nonprofit — using a registered agent (ours got it done in under 12 hours!).
Stay tuned for Issue #5, where we drop the full video tutorial.
🔥 CASE STUDY: DonorsChoose.org
One of the most powerful nonprofit business models in the U.S. isn’t a giant hospital — it’s a teacher-led classroom funding platform.
DonorsChoose.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that generates millions per year, partners with for-profit companies (like Google & Chevron), and leverages a clean, education-based mission to scale impact and revenue.
